Two die in road accident

VILLUPURAM: The car in which a group of lawyers from Madurai were travelling met with an accident at Melpettai in the Olakkur police limits near here on Friday.

T.Sundararajan (55) of Vinayaga Nagar and his assistant S.Raja (35) of Theppakulam in Madurai were killed in the accident.

The injured were admitted to Chengalpattu government hospital as in-patients. The police said the lawyers were on their way to Tirupati in a Qualis.

The Olakkur Police have registered a case. — Special Correspondent

Baalu meets Paswan

CHENNAI: T.R. Baalu, Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways met Ramvilas Paswan, Minister of Steel, Chemicals and Fertilizers in New Delhi on Friday and thanked him on behalf of Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi for approving expansion of the Salem Steel Plant. The expansion project will be taken up at an investment of Rs. 1,533 crores. — Special Correspondent

New syllabus for competitive exams

CHENNAI: The School Education Department on Thursday issued orders for revising the syllabi for the competitive examination for recruitment of lecturers and senior lecturers.

"As the existing syllabus for the competitive examination for recruitment of lecturers and senior lecturers for Directorate of Teacher Education, Research and Training/District Institute of Education and Training is 10 years old, the Teachers' Recruitment Board has since revised the postgraduate syllabi for various subjects, taking into account the latest university syllabi, by conducting a two-day workshop attended by subject experts from various universities of Tamil Nadu," says the order.

The revised syllabi will be published in the State gazette. — Special Correspondent

Counselling for transfer of teachers

VELLORE: Counselling for transfer of teachers in Adi Dravida and Tribal Welfare Schools in Vellore district for 2006-07 would be conducted at the office of the District Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare Officer here on July 29 and 30 as per the following schedule:

July 29 (forenoon)--for transfer of graduate teachers in middle schools and promotion to the posts of headmasters of middle schools; July 29 (afternoon)--transfer of headmasters of elementary schools and promotion to the post of headmasters of elementary schools; July 30 (forenoon)--transfer and promotion of secondary grade teachers; July 30 (afternoon)--transfer for hostel wardens.

The Vellore Collector has in a release requested the teachers to participate in the counselling sessions. — Special Correspondent

Bhirmanandham

quits post

CHENNAI: C.V. Bhirmanandham has resigned his post as Vice-Chancellor of the Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University. His resignation was announced on Thursday.

Dr. Bhirmanandham, a cardiologist, held the post from February 2002 to July 2006. He retired as Head of Department of Cardiology from Madras Medical College in 2000 and was cardiology consultant in Apollo Hospital before he became Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Dr. Bhirmanandham was the recipient of Dr. B.C.Roy National Award for eminent teacher in 2004. — Staff Reporter

CUDDALORE: A member of the National Commission for Scheduled Tribes Buduru Srinivasulu inaugurated the NLC ST Welfare Association at Neyveli near here on Friday. — Special Correspondent

Train stoppages

TIRUCHI: The Railways has announced additional stoppage for Mysore-Mayiladuturai-Mysore express at Kuthalam and Aduthurai railway stations in the Mayiladuthurai-Kumbakonam section with effect from August 1 for a period of six months on a trial basis. Train No. 6231 Mayiladuturai-Mysore express will depart from Kuthalam station at 5.40 p.m. and Aduthurai station at 5.50 p.m.

Train No. 6232 Mysore-Mayiladuthurai express will depart from Aduthurai at 6.27 a.m. and Kuthalam at 6.40 a.m., according to a railway press release.

Cleaning of

iron cannon

Thanjavur: The Archaeological Survey of India has taken up cleaning work of the iron cannon mounted at the entrance of the town.

The 7.4 metre-long cannon has a diameter of 0.63 metre. The cannon, which was brought from Golkonda in the 17th century by Aurangazeb, was in use till 1893 by Maratta kings.

Help for 83 disabled persons

Tiruvarur: Eighty-three handicapped persons, identified by the district Rehabilitation Department, were to Chennai to get artificial limbs, caliphers and hearing aids given at a special camp by Adhinath Jain Trust.

They would return on July 30, a press release issued said here on Friday.

Two killed

in accident

KARUR: Two women were killed in a road mishap at Manmangalam near here on Wednesday night.

S. Sellammal (45) and her daughter-in-law, Rajeswari (20) of Manmangalam were riding a moped on the Karur-Namakkal National Highway when an unidentified vehicle rammed them. The women were crushed to death on the spot.

BSNL employees

stage dharna

KARUR: Cadres belonging to the BSNL Employees Union staged a demonstration in front of the BSNL Deputy General Manager's office here on Thursday to protest disinvestments in BSNL and Mahanagar Telecom Nigam Limited, privatisation of BSNL infrastructure, seeking autonomy and Navaratna PSU status for the BSNL, besides expressing themselves against increased Foreign Direct Investment. They also wanted the broadband and mobile services increased.

The Telecom Employees Progressive Union State Organising secretary M. Thangavel and the BSNL Employees Union's Jan Basha led the protest demonstration.

Return of security documents

PERAMBALUR: The security documents deposited with the Cooperative Primary Agricultural and Rural Development Banks in Jayamkondam, Ariyalur and Persmbalur, will be returned to those whose farm loans had been waived.

The Joint Registrar of Cooperatives, N. Kandaiah said the documents could be obtained before July 31 at the respective banks, a press release said here.

BPL approval

PERAMBALUR: Grama Sabhas will approve the list of persons below the poverty line (BPL) on August 15.

The list enumerated a few years ago would be on display at the panchayat union offices up to August 10, a press release said here.

The Block Development Officer concerned would entertain objections, inclusion and deletion of names from the public till August 10.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at Mettur dam stood at 110.17against its full level of 120 feet on Friday. The inflow was 7,611 cusecs and the outflow 22,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

LPG cylinders seized

ERODE: Officials from various petroleum companies conducted raids in hotels in Pallipalayam and Erode and also checked vehicles on Thursday. They found that the domestic LPG cylinders were misused for commercial purpose. They seized the cylinders and registered cases against the violators. - Staff Reporter

Found murdered

SALEM: A 73-year-old man was found murdered in his house in Ammapet here on Thursday night.

The police said Mathu of Ammapet, a land broker, was found dead when his grandsons went to his house to invite him for a function. - Staff Reporter

Child labourers rescued

SALEM: A team of officials rescued four children working in a workshop in Thathubhaikuttai area here on Friday. According to official sources, the team led by Project Director of Smile P.V. Viswanathan and Labour inspector K. Dharmalingam, raided a number of workshops. They found four children employed in a workshop and rescued them. - Staff Reporter

Arrested

SALEM: The police arrested a person for attempting to steal a gold chain from a woman here on Friday. The police said a man approached Rajamani (50), who was running a shop in Pillukadai Gate, and tried to steal the chain from her. People near the shop caught him and handed over to the Annathanapatti police. The man was identified as Prabhu. - Staff Reporter

Japanese team visit

SALEM: A team of officials from Japan visited the district to inspect the works taken up under the Tamil Nadu Afforestation Programme with the assistance from the Japanese Government. According to a Collectorate release, the team visited Kodambakkadu in Ayodhyapattinam and saw the water resource development activities and community development works. - Staff Reporter

Student killed

in road accident

TIRUNELVELI: An SSLC student was killed in a road accident at Chokkampatti on Friday.

The police said S. Muthukumar (14) of Chokkampatti was returning home on Friday from school when a Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation bus fatally knocked him down.

The Kadayanallur police are investigating.

Cyclist fatally

knocked down

Nagercoil: A cyclist was killed in a road accident on Friday.

According to police, Suyambulingam (42) of Pothayadi near Kanyakumari was proceeding towards Nagercoil in a cycle when a van knocked him down fatally. Padmakumr and his family members Kalaivani and Nagamuthu, who were travelling in the van, were injured.

Heavy rain in Kanyakumari

Nagercoil: Heavy rain continued to lash various parts of the district for the second day on Friday.

The maximum rainfall of 8.5 mm was recorded at Boothapandi, followed Chittar I and Pechipparai (7 mm each), Surulode (6.2 mm), Perunchani and Nagercoil (4.6 mm each) and Kannimar (3.2 mm).

The water level in Pechipparai dam stood at 40.45 feet (total capacity 48 feet), 44.40 feet in Perunchani (77 feet), 7.2 feet (18 feet) and 7.35 feet in Chittar II (18 feet).

Results published

MADURAI: Revaluation results B.A. and B. Com. degree semester examinations of Madurai Kamaraj University were published on July 24 and 28 respectively.

A press release from S. Shanmugiah, Controller of Examinations, said students could access their results at www.mkuniversity.org/revalue.asp.

They could get the updated mark statements by surrendering the old mark sheet to the principals of respective colleges where they underwent the course.

Two hurt in blaze at fireworks unit

SIVAKASI: Two workers sustained burn injuries following a blaze in a fireworks unit at Anuppankulam near here on Friday evening.

The injured, S. Bommaih (45) and G. Kalidas (27), were admitted to the Government Hospital here. The Sivakasi (East) police are investigating.

Eye camps from August 1

Ramanathapuram: National Programme for Control of Blindness and District Blindness Control Society will conduct eye-screening camps from August 1 to 31. S. Suresh Andrew, Joint-Director of Medical and Rural Health Services, said services of non-governmental organisations and mobile ophthalmic units would be utilised for the camp.

Training programme

Ramanathapuram: The Department of Home Science of Thassim Beevi Abdul Kader College for Women, Kilakarai, Krishnamoorthy Institute of Algology, Chennai, and Seaweed Research Utilisation Association, Mandapam, will jointly conduct a training programme on seaweed farming and processing from August 3 to 5 at the college.

Sumayaa Dawood, Principal, said 13 resource persons would participate in the deliberations.

Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Friday stood at 122.80 feet (capacity 136)with an inflow of 555 cusecs and a discharge of 1,038 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 44.59 feet (capacity 71) with an inflow of 559 cusecs and a discharge of 41 cusecs. The combined Periyar credit stood at 4,212 mcft.

Thaniyamangalam recorded 17 mm of rainfall followed by Periyar dam 12, Tekkadi 6, Gudalur and Shanmuganadhi 1 each. — Staff Reporter
