Thumping win for Tiruvallur DCA

CHENNAI: Tiruvallur DCA crushed Virudhunagar DCA by 306 runs on the back of a 110 from left-hander S. Venkatvasan and a six-wicket haul by M. Azhagumani in the TNCA-Sumeru Soft inter-district under-17 tournament for the P.R. Thevar trophy.

Venkatvasan's innings took just 94 balls and contained 11 fours and a six. G. Dinesh made 96, while S. Manoraj scored an unbeaten 78 as Tiruvallur piled on 350 for two in 50 overs.

In another match, E. Ram Prasad scalped five, including a hat-trick, to help Cuddalore DCA to a six-wicket win.

Zone A: Erode 191 in 49 overs (A. Yuvaraj 36, B. Sathish Kumar 36, Arun Kumar four for 21) lost to Thiruvarur 192 for eight in 44 overs (K. Kaviarasan 39, S. V. Narendran 37, Vijayan four for 38); Dharmapuri 168 in 48.3 overs (G. Silambarasan 42, N. Siva four for 32) bt Pondicherry 151 in 39.1 overs (S. Selvam three for 38, Kaniamudhan three for 40).

Zone B: Theni 301 for eight in 50 overs (Sudesh 61, Dinesh Karthik 54, Kamalaraj 40 not out) bt Karur 93 in 26.3 overs (Palanichamy four for 15); Thanjavur 198 in 50 overs (Balakarthik 42) bt Tiruchi 168 in 39.1 overs.

Zone C: Perambalur 35 in 12 overs (Gautham five for 11, Nithish three for 14) lost to Coimbatore 36 for one in seven overs; Ramanathapuram 142 in 42.4 overs (Saran 36, Godsun four for 36) bt Kanyakumari 118 in 37.1 overs (Arun three for 17).

Zone D: Nilgiris 163 in 42.5 overs (A. Bala Murali 43, R. Pradeep Kumar 31, E. Ram Prasad five for 14) lost to Cuddalore 164 for four in 29.3 overs (G. Rajesh 32, M. Balajee 42); Tiruvallur 350 for two in 50 overs (S. Venkatvasan 110, G. Dinesh 96, S. Manoraj 78 not out, B. Karthick 30 not out) bt Virudhunagar 44 in 11.4 overs (M. Azhagumani six for 18).

Zone E: Krishnagiri 202 for nine in 50 overs (J. Balakrishnan 91, Guru Raghavendra 33) bt Pudukottai 119 for nine in 50 overs; Kanchipuram 235 for nine in 50 overs (Vijay Shankar 84 not out, Kevin Sukumar 65, V. Naresh Babu four for 52) bt Vellore 151 for nine in 50 overs (Rohith 36 not out).

Zone F: Dindigul 229 in 50 overs (K. Deepan Babu 59, P. Goikul 56) vs. Salem 159 for four in 34.3 overs (abandoned); Nagapattinam 116 in 33.1 overs lost to Tuticorin 117 for six in 35.5 overs.

Zone G: Namakkal 90 in 29 overs (Amarnath four for seven) lost to Thiruvannamalai 93 for two in 17 overs; Villupuram 127 in 28.2 overs lost to Madurai 128 for seven in 30 overs.

Packiaraj shines

Packiaraj (51 n.o) helped Sethu Institute of Technology, Kariapatti, defeat Mohamed Sathak College of Engineering, Kilakarai, by six wickets and enter the final of the Anna University Zone 9 inter-Engineering tournament at Karaikudi on Friday.

The scores (Semifinals): Mohd. Sathak C.E. Kilakarai 121 in 29.1 overs lost to S.I.T. Kariapatti 123 for four in 23.1 overs.

RVS College of Engg. Dindigul 173 for eight in 30 overs bt Vikram College of Engg. Madurai 85 (Pombadian 40).

Mepco takes title

S. Sanjay (70, 54b) helped host Mepco Schlenk Engineering College, Sivakasi, topple the defending champion Government College of Engineering, Tirunelveli by 53 runs in the final and claim the title in the Anna University Zone 10 inter-engineering cricket tournament here on Friday.

The scores (final): Mepco Schlenk Engg. College 176 for seven in 25 overs (S. Sanjay 70) bt Govt. CC Tirunelveli 123 in 23 overs.

Third place: Sri Veerasamy Chettiar College of Engg. Puliangudi 72 in 23.3 overs lost to Sun College of Engg. Nagercoil 77 for two in 12.1 overs.

SAI to spot talent

Sports Authority of India has set a Special Area Games centre at Myladuthurai to identify talent in the disciplines of weightlifting, hockey, volleyball, basketball and athletics. Dr. R. Subramanian will be in charge of the centre.

ANJC keeps crown

Ayya Nadar Janakiammal College, Sivakasi, retained title for the fifth successive year defeating Saraswathy Narayanan College, Madurai 33-11 in the final of the Madurai Kamaraj University `A' Zone inter-collegiate handball tournament at Sivakasi on Friday.
