CHENNAI: Like the shooters who have been doing well for India in the ongoing World Championship in Zagreb (Croatia), the Union Minister for Panchayati Raj, Youth Affairs and Sports, Mani Shankar Aiyar, exhorted the rowers too to work hard and bring more laurels to the country. Aiyar was speaking at a function organised by the Sports Authority of India to give certificates to those who had attended a six-week rowing course, conducted jointly with the Tamil Nadu Rowing Association. In all, there were 21 participants for the course from various parts of the country. The list had eight Army personnel and six from the Police, apart from Olympian Inderpal Singh and internationals Puppy Singh, Binu Kurian, R.K. Pillai, Kudrat Ali, Johnson Xavier and Roshan Lal.
Scholarships given
At the function, SAI scholarships, totalling Rs. 9.80 lakhs, were given to 124 meritorious sportspersons in Tamil Nadu. The disciplines covered were athletics, ball badminton, badminton, basketball, carrom, chess, fencing, football, kabaddi, karate, rowing, gymnastics, swimming, taekwondo, volleyball and weightlifting. T.P.M. Mohideenkhan, Minister for Environment and Sports, was the chief guest.
