SALEM: With the Tamil Nadu Government suspending M.Phil courses through correspondence from the next academic year, the distance education wing of Periyar University, Periyar Institute of Distance Education (PRIDE), has received a large number of applications for M.Phil courses this year. Over 2,000 students have applied for the courses for the calendar year in PRIDE and about 800 for the academic year. In 2005-06 only about 200 students had applied for the M.Phil courses. As admissions to the courses in the calendar year would remain open for another week, the university is expecting a few hundred more students for the courses. The last date for admissions to M.Phil in the academic year is August 31. But it might be extended, university officials said. According to the Vice-Chancellor of the university, T. Balakrishnan, the state government had taken a policy decision to impart M.Phil courses only through regular stream from the next academic year to ensure quality. "The university can manage the sudden increase in the number of students in these courses in PRIDE with the existing resources. We are preparing a list of guides in the university area. Allocation of guides to the students will begin shortly," he said.
