KOCHI: In a bid to ward off competition from private mobile networks, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited is introducing a unique new plan from August 1. The Rs.725-plan will give customers free talk time to any BSNL network, mobile or landline, within the circle. To other mobile networks, whether mobile or fixed, the Plan charges would be 40 paise a minute. The Plan will also allow customers to call other circles at a reasonable rate. A BSNL mobile customer would be able to call another mobile customer in a different BSNL circle at 40 paise a minute while the charges to a BSNL fixed line in another circle and to any line or other networks would cost Rs.1.50 a minute.
ISD calls
The Plan has a competitive edge for ISD calls too. For calls made to the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, the charges would be Rs.6 a minute and that to all European countries other than the U.K., it will be Rs.8 a minute. And, it would cost only Rs.10 for anywhere else in the world. These rates are by far most competitive compared to the charges in other Plans, a senior official of the BSNL said. "We hope to have a lot of migration to this Plan," he added. Meanwhile, the newly introduced scheme of BSNL in which a post paid customer can call to a mobile and a landline number at 10 paise a minute will soon be extended to the pre-paid customer too. The BSNL official said that the customers will be intimated about the scheme. The new scheme has witnessed overwhelming response, going by the queue at the customer care centres. It was announced through SMS message just two days ago. At BSNL Bhavan alone, there were more than 500 registrations on Thursday and Friday. The public sector telecom operator has about four lakh post-paid customers in the Kerala circle, of which abut one lakh are in Ernakulam SSA.
