239 panchayats to go to polls in Nellore

Elections to be held for 1,830 wards


  • Ballot paper for sarpanch to be pink and white for ward members
  • Security geared up in sensitive villages

    NELLORE: Two hundred and thirtynine panchayats in 18 mandals of Kavali revenue division will go to the polls on Saturday to decide the fate of 572 candidates.

    Elections will be held to 311 of the 316 gram panchayats and 3,010 of 3,060 wards in the Kavali revenue division. But only 239 panchayats will go to the polls, as 72 had been declared elected unanimously while elections for the remaining five panchayats will be conducted in the year-end, as their term will expire in December. Elections for 1,830 wards will be held, as 1,140 have been declared elected unanimously. The rest were countermanded for a variety of reasons and all of them will go to the polls on August 10, according to District Panchayat Officer (DPO) K. Anand.

    "The ballot paper for sarpanch will be pink, while it will be white for ward members. Voting will be held by secret ballot from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at different polling stations across the Kavali revenue division on Saturday," the DPO said.     Polls in 14 mandals

    Tirupati Special Correspondent writes: In all, 260 gram panchayats along with 1,314 wards are set to go to the polls in the first phase on Saturday in Tirupati revenue division covering 14 mandals.

    There will be no election in 130 panchayats along with 2,166 wards following the unanimous election of sarpanches and ward members.

    Polling staff has fanned into their respective destinations with the their election material.

    Meanwhile, the district police administration has deployed forces in all polling stations. Prohibitoryorders under Section 144 Criminal Procedure Code have been clamped in the division.
