Bank employees' strike hits transactions

Special Correspondent

Salaries of State Government staff may be delayed

HYDERABAD: Salaries of the State Government staff are likely to be delayed following the `total' strike here on Friday by employees and officers of all public sector banks, except State Bank of India (SBI), who are members of the three apex level organisations--AIBEA, AIBOA and BEFI. Cash and across-the-counter transactions were paralysed in the banks.

The State Government employees are likely to get their salaries on Tuesday, as the cheques to be presented for clearing on July 29 may be affected because of the pressure and banks working for half-a-day. Consequently, the cheques are likely to be cleared on Monday and payments received in the next two days, according to a spokesman of a public sector bank employees' union.

He said customers did not suffer much on Friday as the banks' ATM centres had sufficient cash. Members of the All-India Andhra Bank Award Employees' Union, affiliated to AIBEA, struck work in response to the call given by three organisations.

Demonstrations held

T. Ravindranath, general secretary, said in a statement that employees and officers staged demonstrations at all its zonal offices and main branches. The staff staged a `centralised' demonstration at the head office here.

Demands of the employees include withdrawal of RBI circular on outsourcing of banking services, dropping the move to amend Section 12 (2) of the Banking Regulations Act on removal of ceiling on voting rights in banks, filling of nearly one lakh vacancies and expeditious extension of one more option for pension.
