Governor on birthday

HYDERABAD: Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday called on Governor Rameshwar Thakur and conveyed his greetings on the latter's 79th birthday. He expressed hope that the State would make rapid strides under the guidance of a statesman like Mr. Thakur.

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee on Friday celebrated the 97th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister Kasu Brahmananda Reddy, with several senior leaders garlanding his portrait in Gandhi Bhavan.

Dewan appointed

HYDERABAD: Chief Secretary T. K. Dewan who retires on July 31 has been appointed Chairman, Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.

He will have a two-year term from the date of assuming charge, according to orders issued by General Administration Department here on Friday.

HYDERABAD: The State Committee of the CPI (ML-New Democracy) has sought immediate production in court of CPI (ML) Chandra Pulla Reddy Group leader Radhakka who was arrested on July 26 with four others in Rajahmundry. Gummadi Narsaiah, MLA, and R. Subash Chandra Bose, party secretary, in separate statements here on Friday alleged that Radhakka and others were arrested while they were travelling by train from Kolkata. - Special Correspondent

Chittoor drought-hit

HYDERABAD: Two Chittoor Congress MLAs — G. Muddukrishnama Naidu and P. Ramachandra Reddy — on Friday appealed to Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy to declare Chittoor district drought-affected and release funds to tackle the crisis. In a letter to Dr. Reddy, the MLAs said rainfall was below 30 per cent of the normal in June-July and the farmers could not even undertake sowing operations due to this. - Special Correspondent

Man, son drowned

at Madipadu

GUNTUR: Two of four persons crossing the Krishna from Mutyala to Madipadu in Guntur district were drowned on Thursday night while the other two swam to safety.

Residents of Madipadu, Kambala Khader Vali, 55, and his son Kambala Venkateswara Rao, 22, had gone to the NRI Hospital at Mangalagiri and returned to Mutyala via Jaggayyapeta in Krishna district to cross into Guntur district at 9.30 p.m., but the regular punt service had stopped.

They invited two others waiting at Mutyala to cross to Madipadu to join them in their dingy (putti) but hardly had they travelled some 10 metres from the bank when the dingy capsized. - Staff Reporter

Rain likely at

many places

VISAKHAPATNAM: Thursday's low pressure became well marked on Friday morning over northwest Bay adjoining West Bengal coast, according to a special weather bulletin issued by the Cyclone Warning Centre here on Friday.

Under its influence, rain or thundershowers are likely at many places over Srikakulam, Vizianagaram and Visakhapatnam districts and at a few places over coastal Andhra Pradesh during the next 48 hours.

Isolated heavy rain is also likely over north coastal Andhra Pradesh during the same period.

Ravi Chandra has put Adusimalli Ravichandra Babu, panchayat secretary of Basinenipalli gram panchayat of Seetharampur mandal, under suspension for violating the model code of conduct. With complaints pouring in about Babu's direct involvement in canvassing for his mother A Lakshmi Devi, who is a contestant for sarpanch post of Peddireddypalli village of Varikuntapadu mandal, the district administration conducted an enquiry. - Staff Reporter

KADAPA: CITU and United Medical and Health Employees Union members on Friday burnt copies of Government Memo No. 8459/170 issued in April 2006 pruning salaries of paramedical employees and sought scrapping of the memo.

Madanapalle: As per the orders of higher medical authorities a round-the-clock cell will be set up at the local Government hospital to treat patients suffering from fever, according to in charge hospital superintendent Paul Ravi Kumar. - Correspondent

Canara Bank gesture

NALGONDA: The Canara Bank's Nagarjunasagar unit donated a music system to the Mother Theresa Old Age Home at Nalgonda as part of social identification programme on Friday. The home has 78 inmates.

Mr. Prasad said the bank's Revoor branch had given away two ceiling fans to Shishu Gruha, an orphanage, in the district Headquarters on July 22. - Staff Reporter

Bank services affected

Kakinada : The functioning of all 250 banks in the district except the SBI was paralysed on Friday following the employees and officers all India strike. K. Adinarayana Murthy, joint secretary East Godavari Bank employees' coordination committee while heading the demonstration claimed cash transactions had been paralysed and the striking employees forced the closure of the clearinghouses all over the district. The strike was in protest against the Government policies and attempts of outsourcing of work to private agencies and contractors. — Correspondent

Medical employees' protest

Kakinada : Medical employees owing allegiance to the United Medical and Health employees union led by its secretary Palivela Srinivas staged dharna in front of the Collectorate on Friday protesting against the Government orders barring the contract employees from getting the DA HRA, LTC, medical reimbursement and other benefits. They burnt copies of the memo of the finance department specifying contractual appointees will be given consolidated pay but not other allowances. — Correspondent

Housewife found dead

VIZIANAGARAM : Paluri Venkata Lakshmi (32) a housewife of Bellanaveedhi in Cheepurupalli allegedly committed suicide. Her body was found hanging from a beam in her home on Friday. She was married to P. Sankara Rao for 10 years and has two children. Though no external injuries were found on her body, a case of suspicious death was registered.- Correspondent

Two killed in road accident

ADILABAD: K. Anil and K. Ashanna, both residents of Utnoor in Adilabad district, died in a road accident on Thursday night when their car fell into a river from the 40-foot bridge near Kopa Mandvi in Pandharkawda taluk of Yavatmal district in Maharashtra. R. Rajanna and Md. Kalim who were accompanying them to Nagpur to visit a patient were being treated at the Government Hospital at Pandharkawda, about 45 km from Adilabad town. - Staff Reporter

Blood donation

ADILABAD: A blood donation camp was organised by the National Cadet Corps' 32 (A) Battalion, Adilabad, on Friday. Some 85 cadets donated blood on the occasion. District blood bank in-charge B.R. Raju spoke on the importance of blood donation.

Diabetes camp tomorrow

KARIMNAGAR: The Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in collaboration with the District Headquarters Hospital in Karimnagar is conducting a free diabetes camp at the Civil Hospital in the town on Sunday. Patients interested are advised to attend with empty stomach between 6 and 9 a.m. Patients are also requested to register themselves at the Civil Hospital. Blood test camp would also be held from 6 to 9 a.m. and medical assistance provided from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. — Staff Reporter

KHAMMAM: The Central Empowered committee, headed by P. V. Jayakrishnan, Chairman, will visit some of the areas facing risk of submergence by the waters of the Polavaran project in Bhadrachalam and Palvancha divisions on Saturday and Sunday. `Draconian' GO

VIZIANAGARAM: The State Government has issued GO No.422 prohibiting media personnel from entering labour rooms, OTs, post-operative wards, ICUs etc. in Government hospitals.

The GO has instructed hospitals to open a ''Press Room'' in major hospitals where they can seek information and interviews.

State APUWJ secretary G. Atchutha Rao took exception to the `draconian order' and threatened to launch protests if it was not withdrawn.
