PONDICHERRY: A welfare officer attached to the Pondicherry Social Welfare Board was arrested on Friday by the anti corruption wing of the CBI for allegedly taking bribe.
Caught red-handed
CBI sources told The Hindu that welfare the officer, Suresh Babu, was caught red-handed while taking a bribe of Rs.5,000 at his office from an NGO representative. The arrest was made after the representative complained to the anti corruption wing of the CBI office in Chennai about the demand by the officer to issue a certificate. The NGO, which runs a nursery in Pondicherry for orphans, bought some crèche and applied for a certificate as proof of purchase to get funds from the Central Social Welfare Board. According to the complaint the officer demanded Rs 10,000 for issuing the certificate. Based on the complaint, the CBI team laid a trap for the officer in his office itself.
