PEOPLE'S ISSUES: Volunteers of Pondicherry unit of CPI (M) take to the streets on Friday.
Pondicherry: Volunteers of the Pondicherry unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) launched their padayatra to bring to focus the hardships faced by the people in getting essential commodities through public distribution system. They also urged the government to implement various assurances extended to the weaker sections, labourers and also the unemployed. The State secretary of CPI(M) V. Perumal led the team of volunteers, who commenced the yatra from Nellithope here on Friday. The participants included party functionaries R. Rajangam and S. Ramachandran. The party sources said that volunteers split themselves into 50 groups and each would cover nearly 15 kms a day and the yatra would come to an end on July 31. Their demands included that the promises made before the elections by the ruling Congress should be implemented. A Welfare Board should be created to benefit workers in the unorganised sector such as construction workers, auto drivers and those working in shops and establishments. The deputy secretary of the party here R. Rajangam said that the participants in the yatra would also hold road corner meetings. The yatra was conducted simultaneously in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions.
