MADURAI: Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption (DVAC) officials are closing in on some former All-India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Ministers after preliminary enquiries revealed "wealth disproportionate to their known sources of income." DVAC sources said in many cases, immovable assets had been bought in the name of "benamis." Investigators had reasons to believe that a couple of former Ministers had acquired assets abroad with the help of multinational companies that made foreign direct investments in the country/State. DVAC teams made discrete enquiries in many districts in recent weeks on the wealth amassed by the former Ministers.
Specific information
"We had specific information that a former Minister had purchased 200 acres of land in the Kodaikanal hills. Though we were able to identify the land and local people also acknowledged that the VIP owned it, the documents were registered in some other name. There are more instances like this, including a textile mill," a top DVAC official said. He said the agency was keen to ensure a prima facie case was made out before further action was taken.
