Wage board for journalists demanded

New Delhi: The demand for a new wage board for journalists and non-journalist employees of newspapers and news agencies was raised in the Lok Sabha on Friday in the wake of the constitution of the Sixth Pay Commission for central government employees. The new wage board should have a definite time-frame for implementation of the recommendations for revised pay scales, Communist Party of India (Marxist) member K.S, Manoj said.

The television journalists should also be brought under the purview of the Working Journalists Act 1955, he added.

He said till the time the new pay scales come into effect, the journalists and non-journalist employees should be given a 25 per cent interim relief.

Inter-school competitions held

NEW DELHI: Vishwa Bharati Public School at Noida organised an inter-school art and craft competition, "Dab `n' Splash", at its premises on Friday. Students from 28 schools from Delhi, Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad participated in the competition. The students were divided into 10 categories and given various topics to paint. The schools that bagged the first prize in various categories were DAV, Noida; Fr. Agnel, Greater Noida; Sommerville, Vasundara; APJ, Noida; VBPS, Noida, Amity, Saket; and Sommerville, Noida.

NHPC net profit increases

NEW DELHI: During the first quarter that ended on June 30, National Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited earned a net profit after tax of Rs. 229 crores as against Rs. 191 crores during the corresponding quarter of the previous year, registering an increase of 20 per cent. Net sales for the quarter ended June 30 increased from Rs. 472 crores to Rs. 496 crores, registering an increase of 5 per cent over the corresponding quarter of the previous year, a release said.

Scribe passes away

New Delhi: Sports journalist Shashi Pandey died here on Friday. He was 47 and is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter. A sports journalist with Bhasha -- PTI's Hindi service -- Mr Pandey had been admitted to the AIIMS hospital and he passed away this morning, according to family sources. A chief sub-editor, Mr Pandey started his career as a sports journalist in 1986.

ASI jailed for bribe

New Delhi: A city court on Friday remanded an assistant sub-inspector of Delhi police to 14-day judicial custody for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5000. Patiala House Court Special Judge Indermeet Kaur Kochchar remanded Satveer Singh, 42, to judicial custody till August 11. The CBI had yesterday arrested Singh on the Patiala House Court premises red-handed.
