Suba Thangavelan
CHENNAI: Housing Minister Suba Thangavelan on Friday assured the Assembly that all problems relating to the issue of papers for Housing Board land and apartments would be sorted out in the next three months. The process of giving papers to the people would begin on Monday for the Mogappair scheme, he said, in response to a query from M. Kannappan (MDMK). Mr. Kannappan pointed to the difficulties faced by people who had bought Housing Board property and said that many were forced to pay as much as 10 times more in the name of final charges. He also wanted to know the fate of people who utilised the earlier regularisation scheme for layouts.Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin said those who had paid penalty earlier need not pay now. Mr. Kannappan also wanted the restoration of toddy shops because it was not as harmful as IMFL and was a source of livelihood for about five lakh people. Selvam (DPI) said the process of change of name to Tamil for many people had been held up because of the steep hike in charges effected by the department. (The DPI had launched a campaign to change Sanskrit names to Tamil and hundreds of partymen had changed names). But the names could not be gazetted because the charges had been revised from Rs.220 to Rs.445. Intervening, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said those who wished to change their names to Tamil should not be punished. He announced that charges would be slashed to Rs.50 from Rs.445. Mr. Selvam welcomed the decision to set up an Inquiry Commission for looking into the Sirudhavoor land deal. D. Yasodha (Congress) wanted the Government to ensure that companies that set up plants in SIPCOT industrial estates recruit 10 per cent staff from among the locals. The government should inquire if this has been adhered to, she added.
