MANGALORE: The State Government has approved the work on the Mangalore city-Padil Bajal railway overpass at the Kankanady-Bajal level crossing. It conveyed this to the Public Works Department and the Mangalore City Corporation in a letter on Friday. J. Krishna Palemar, Surathkal MLA, said people from Alape, Kermar, Bajal, Jalligudde, Veeranagar, Faisal Nagar, and Pakkaladka were finding it difficult to cross over to the Kankanady side towards National Highway 48 as most of the time the railway gate would be closed.
Relief
The Government's decision had come as a relief to them, he added. Corporators Sesamma, Appi and Surekha Rai have welcomed the approval given to the project. According to Mayor K. Ashraf, people of these villages met him in September last with regard to the overpass, and accordingly, the city corporation council earmarked Rs. 1 crore towards the work. The work would be taken up according to the government notification, Mr. Ashraf added. Suresh Bajal, secretary of the Horata Samithi, thanked the Government for clearing the project. According to D.V. Sadananda Gowda, Mangalore MP, the project would be taken up at a cost of Rs. 8.3 crore of which Rs. 1 crore would be from the corporation. While the Railways would be pay 50 per cent of the remaining cost, the rest would come from the State Government, he said.
