Business centre opened at Tambaram Post Office

Staff Reporter

Will cater to corporate sector needs, bulk customers

TAMBARAM : Soon, residents of Tambaram can hope to find the postman knocking their doors. Not to deliver money orders, mails or greeting cards. But to collect them. The Business Centre catering to the needs of corporate sector, bulk customers and also individuals who want to deliver a large volume of posts was formally inaugurated at the Tambaram Head Post Office on Friday by A. Janakiraman, Tambaram Municipal Chairman (in-charge).

According to officials of the Postal Department, the centre would from now on handle all mails, including ordinary post, speedpost, registered letters and businesspost. Apart from benefiting the corporate sector, including companies and factories from the nearby Madras Export Processing Zone and the scores of commercial organisations, public sector and private companies, the Business Centre would also be of use to individuals who wish to send a large number of ordinary posts. A call to the business centre would be enough for an executive or a postman to collect mails from the customer's house.

For instance, if an individual wants to send greeting or invitation cards to a number of people, all he has to do is hand over the letters along with a list of addresses. Inserting the card in the envelopes, pasting of addresses, sealing the envelopes, pasting the stamps or franking them, would all be done at the Business Centre by staff at a nominal charge, said A. Govindarajan, Senior Superintendent of Posts, Tambaram Division.

Dedicated team

Though corporates and government organisations were availing bulk mail service, they were throwing open the service to the public he said, adding the Business Centre had a dedicated team of staff and an exclusive telephone line for the purpose.

Speaking after inaugurating the Centre, Mr. Janakiraman said a number of post offices were functioning from rented premises. For instance, the post office at Selaiyur is catering to several villages. He said the Municipality, would be glad to allot a piece of land so that the department to construct its building.

Officials of the department also pointed out that international money transfer was offered at Tambaram post office in association with Western Union.

At present more than 250 transactions were being made every month, and plans were on to increase it to 500. Residents who want to make use of the Business Centre can contact: 2226 2998 and 2226 6203.
