HYDERABAD: Activists of the Communist Part of India (Marxist) staged a dharna at Adikmet on Friday protesting against the proposal of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board to install water meters for all water connections, including the public water taps as a part of its pilot project to ensure round-the-clock water supplies in the city.

They alleged that the board authorities were blindly implementing the guidelines of World Bank ignoring the plight of slum dwellers. "Installation of water meters is a ploy to put additional burden on the consumers and also collect charges even from slum dwellers," they said.

The activists said the new initiative by the board was an indication to enhance water charges and demanded that the Government immediately withdraw the proposals.
