STRIKE EFFECT: The head office of State Bank of Mysore on K.G. Road in Bangalore wore a deserted look on Friday in view of the strike call given by bank unions. Photo: K. Murali Kumar
Bangalore: Most nationalised banks remained closed here on Friday in the wake of the strike called by the All-India Bank Employees' Association, All-India Bank Officers' Association and the Bank Employees' Federation of India. Foreign banks and cooperative banks and several private banks functioned almost normally. The bank employees have been opposing outsourcing of critical functions and demanding more pension options and fresh recruitment.
ATMs run out of cash
While the unions did not ask for bank ATMs to be closed, some customers reported that ATMs had run out of cash by the afternoon. In the morning, the bank employees held a demonstration in front of the State Bank of Mysore headquarters. Union leaders, who addressed them, said outsourcing was a risky trend as customer confidentiality might be compromised and a correct assessment of credit worthiness may not be possible. Across the State nearly 15,000 employees participated in the strike, the union leaders claimed.
