Robbery on trains: RPF arrests gang of three

KOCHI: A gang of three men engaged in robbery on night trains were arrested by the Railway Protection Force (RPF) during early hours of Friday.

Those arrested were identified as Chandran alias Aana Chandran, 43, of Vallakadavu, Thiruvananthapuram; K.R. Ravi alias Erode Ravi, 49, of Erode; and K.V. Biju George alias Kidney Biju, of Cheranalloor. The accused were arrested from Kochi-Trichy Tea Garden Express (Train Number 6865) after the train passed Aluva station at 6 a.m.

They were nabbed in a joint operation by the Ernakulam and Thrissur circles of the RPF between Ernakulam and Palakkad. According to T.S. Gopakumar, Circle Inspector, RPF, the gang had confessed to operating on night trains between Thiruvananthapuram and Erode for the last two years. The RPF had been tracking the movement of the gang for a couple of days based in intelligence reports. Four wristwatches, five mobile phones and Rs.1,050 in cash were recovered from the accused.

The accused have cases registered against them in different police stations across the State. They have also undergone imprisonment for various offences. Two arrest warrants are pending against Biju at Thrissur Town and Irinjalakuda police stations.

The accused were produced before the Chief Judicial First Class Magistrate - II and remanded.

Woman electrocuted

Mary, 70, wife of Dominic Livera, of Mulavukadu was electrocuted from a broken electric line lying in the field. She was going to church on Friday at 6.45 a.m. She died while being taken to the hospital, said the police.
