KOCHI: Minister for Health P.K. Sreemathy has called for improving the health literacy of women in the State. In her inaugural address at the workshop on "Women and health literacy in Kerala" held at Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) on Friday, Ms. Sreemathy said that women were lagging behind in understanding various aspects related to healthcare. The Minister said that the Government would make efforts to create more awareness on health problems among women in the State. Delivering his presidential address, CUSAT Vice-Chancellor P.K.Abdul Azis urged the Government to formulate a health literacy scheme combining the knowledge available in both modern and traditional systems of medicine. Kochi Mayor Mercy Williams, who was the chief guest, said that the number of women facing domestic violence in Kerala was high. She said that efforts should be made to bring relief to such women. The workshop on health literacy was organised by the Centre for Population Studies at CUSAT.
