KOCHI: Married Accommodation Project (MAP), a housing scheme for the Armed Forces personnel, formally got underway in the city with the laying of the foundation stone by Lieutenant Anup Cherian, the junior-most married naval officer posted at the Southern Naval Command. Vice-Admiral S.C.S Bangara, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Command, was present at the function. Initially, 99 houses for officers will be completed in 18 months at an approximate cost of Rs.31.50 crores. MAP was conceived in 2001 to provide good married accommodation to personnel in the three services as a one-time measure, at an approximate cost of Rs.18,000 crores. The plan is to build 2.5 lakh dwelling units, covering 364 stations in three phases. Kochi, is one of the six naval stations included in Phase-I of the project. It will see 452 quarters being constructed, 99 for officers at Panampilly Nagar and 353 quarters for sailors at Fort Kochi, at an approximate cost of Rs.77 crores. The Commanding Officer of INS Venduruthy, along with Lt. Cdr. P S Samra as the Project Officer and Lt. Col. H S Mann as the Project Manager will manage the execution of the project.
