KOCHI: Model Engineering College (MEC), Thrikkakara, is setting a record of sorts in campus placement. Just a week into their final year classes, 181 students out of 220 in the seventh-semester batch have already landed plum jobs in leading companies. Students who have found jobs will only pass out in June next year. The top IT companies that recruited MEC youth include Wipro, TCS, Infosys, MindTree, US Technology, Syntel and IBS. Wipro, the first company to reach the campus, took in 75 students. While 61 students were selected to the software division, 14 had been absorbed into the very large scale integration (VLSI) division. TCS offered jobs to 61 students while MindTree took 40 young talents on the campus. US Technology selected 16 while Infosys took 13 students. IBS offered jobs to seven. Syntel took three students. On the salary front, there is good news for the students. The companies have offered annual salaries ranging from Rs.2.3 lakhs to 2.7 lakhs for entry-level jobs. The highest pay packet for the seventh-semester batch at MEC till now is Rs.2.85 lakhs. "The average salary is at least Rs.30, 000 more than what companies offered last year," says Manu Sankar Das, placement cell convener of the college. He said that the placement cell has streamlined work to ensure placement of the remaining students at the earliest. The mood is upbeat, as their senior batch had also got good placements in leading IT companies. The highest salary offered to that batch was Rs.6.2 lakhs. Principal Jyothi John said that students of MEC are in great demand in the job market. The college currently offers three B.Tech. programmes that include Electronics and Communication, Computer Science and Electronics and Biomedical Engineering. Professor John said that companies had been trying to get the first slot in the campus recruitment held on the campus regularly. He said that the demand for manpower had gone up with companies offering jobs to a large number of students. Mini M.G., placement officer and faculty member of Department of Electronics, said that the placement cell offered every possible support to companies visiting the campus to recruit students. According to her, companies like Google and Microsoft are likely to visit the campus soon. The cell also conducts training programmes for students participating in campus recruitment.
