KOCHI: Private bus operators have come out in the open against the "pathetic condition" of most roads in the city.

In a press release, Ernakulam District Private Bus Operators' Association president K.A. Makkar Kunhu lamented that a good portion of the daily collection of buses was being spent on repair works. "Most of the arterial and side roads are in a dilapidated condition and are not motorable. The delay on the part of agencies like the Corporation of Cochin, the PWD and the NHAI in filling small potholes during summer has resulted in they developing into huge holes during the monsoon, endangering motorists."

The worst-maintained roads are Chitoor-Ernakulam Road, Kaloor-Kadavanthra Road, Sahodaran Aiyyappan Road and Elamakkara-Kaloor Road. Accidents have become common because of vehicles falling into the holes or because of applying sudden brakes to evade them. Often the leaf springs and axles of buses break after the vehicles fall into potholes. It also results in tyres bursts. Most accidents happen because of unscientific roads.

Mr. Kunhu said the bus operators would stage demonstrations if the authorities did not undertake immediate repair work.
