NEW DELHI: A large number of income tax payers filed their returns on the first day of the four-day special camp that began at Pragati Maidan here on Friday. To facilitate pensioners and salaried class taxpayers, the department has opened special counters in Hall No.11 A. Till July 31, income tax returns will be received only at Pragati Maidan between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. and no taxpayer will be entertained at the department's Mayur Bhawan office in Connaught Place. Special counters have been opened for senior citizens (those above 65 years). Apart from receiving returns, income tax employees are also assisting people in filing their returns. Similarly, special assistance is being provided to those who want to apply for permanent account number (PAN). Apart from the special counters at Pragati Maidan, the Income Tax Department has also notified 96 post offices across the Capital that are receiving tax returns. The service that began on July 26 has been started so that taxpayers do not have to travel long distances to reach Pragati Maidan to file their tax returns.
