IN HIS HONOUR: Director-General of Indian Coast Guard Prabhakaran Paleri speaking at a reception hosted in his honour by Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the city on Saturday.

KOZHIKODE: Director-General, Indian Coast Guard, Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi Dr. Prabhakaran Paleri has said that a proposal has been submitted for forming a separate Coast Guard district for Lakshadweep.

Dr.Paleri was speaking at a programme `Indian Coast Guard,' and the reception hosted to him by the Calicut Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) here on Saturday . "A proposal has been mooted to form a separate Coast Guard district for Lakshadweep. This would be the 12th district of the Coast Guard."

Dr.Paleri said that in the 28 years of its existence, the Indian Coast Guard has achieved commendable heights. The quality of services rendered by the Indian Coast Guard is comparable to that of the U.S. Coast guard, which has a 200-year old history. "We are the best in the world," he declared.

Indian Coast Guard has a bright future too in providing security to the nation, he added. He said the setting up of the Coast Guard station at Beypore was part of an expansion programme of the Indian Coast Guard. More such stations are planned by March 2007.

Now, both Kozhikode and Lakshadweep stations report to Kochi, which in turn fell under the Western regional command in Mumbai. CCCI president C.E.Chakunni presided.

Port Officer, Calicut, Capt. Haridas C.Nair, director, Calicut Airport, R.Veeraswami, Commandant, Coast Guard Beypore, Jasbir Singh, among others, were present at the programme.

A video presentation on the Indian Coast Guard was presented on the occasion.
