Ally adds to Musharraf's woes

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement, an ally of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (Qaid) in the federal government and in Sind province, has added to President Pervez Musharraf's mounting political troubles by walking out of the Government.

Four Ministers of the MQM in the Federal Cabinet and its Ministers in the Sind Cabinet have resigned reportedly protesting the alleged high-handedness of the Chief Minister of the province who is from the PML(Q).

The MQM is a significant force in Sind. After the resignations, Gen. Musharraf reportedly spoke to the party leader Altaf Hussain who lives in the United Kingdom.

Refusing to accept the resignations, the President instead dispatched PML(Q) top guns, including Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, party secretary-general Mushahid Hussain Sayed and Minister of Information Mohammed Ali Durrani, to Karachi to douse the fire.

Mr. Durrani told a private TV channel that Gen. Musharraf had called a meeting of representatives of the MQM and the Sind government next Tuesday to sort out all issues between them.

What gives the Government hope is that the MQM has not yet walked out of the coalition and has said it will continue on the treasury benches.

Still, the whole affair puts pressure on Gen. Musharraf at a time when the Opposition parties appear to be closing ranks on moving a no-confidence vote against the Government.
