VIJAYAWADA: Keen to encourage the sporting talent among students of Acharya Nagarjuna University, the authorities have announced cash awards for those who have achieved medals in the all-India university and South Zones meets for the year 2005-2006. University Vice-Chancellor V. Bala Mohan Das will give away the awards on Monday at a simple function on the university premises, according to physical director Y. Kishore.
Prize amount
"Gold medal winners in the all-India university meets will get Rs. 5,000 while silver and bronze medallists will be given Rs. 4,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. Those who have bagged gold, silver and bronze medals in the South Zone meets will get Rs. 2,000, Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 respectively," he said here on Saturday. As many as 25 athletes brought laurels to the university by excelling in individual events while the badminton teams, both men and women, and ball badminton men's team won silver medals in the all-India competitions. "Our women's kabaddi team emerged winner in the South West Zone competitions last year," he pointed out. As a warm-up to the forthcoming competitions for the year 2006-2007, the university set in motion several special camps at various places in Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts. The archery camp was inaugurated at SRR & CVR College featuring 25 archers from the university under the supervision of the Krishna District Archery Association. "Bapatla is hosting ball badminton, while kabaddi camp for women is held at Montessori Mahila Kalasala in Vijayawada. Gudivada, Kandukuru (TRR & GVR Degree College) and NBT & NVC College of Narasaraopet are hosting volleyball, softball and weightlifting respectively," Mr. Kishore explained.
Duration
All these camps would be held for 21 days, which would be monitored by colleges concerned with the help of senior players and coaches from the associations.
