3 killed, 4 injured in accident
The deceased were Gopal Iyengar (55), his father Venkatachary (92) and Saya (55), a neighbour of Gopal Iyengar's house in Bangalore. The injured persons Jayasri (49), wife of Gopal Iyengar, their sons Srikanth (26), Rajiv Roshan (24) and driver Manu (36) were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital. They were proceeding to visit Navagraha Kshetras when the accident occurred. Gopal Iyengar was an officer in the Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation. Special Correspondent

Prisoner commits suicide
Vijayan alias Vijayarangan was sentenced to jail on charges of raping and killing a nine-year-old Alamelu of Chellancheri on July 26. He was said to have committed the crime in an inebriated condition and left the body in a sugarcane farm. Vijayan reportedly used a towel to hang himself. On information about the suicide, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Kumaraswamy, along with Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar, visited the prison and made enquiries. Special Correspondent

"He is a lunatic who worked at Ramanathapuram for a while. After he lost the job, he was going everywhere aimlessly and accidentally came to this spot. The camera he carries is not highly sophisticated as reported in a section of the media. He is not logically sound and cannot comprehend, recall and give information coherently," a police officer told The Hindu . The final list of polling stations should be published on August 14, the date on which the manuscript copy of the electoral roll should be completed. The electoral roll should be published on August 31, following the schedule given by the State Election Commission, he said.
Medical camp for children
A medical team, comprising a plastic surgeon and two technicians from the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, screened the children. Out of the 50 children, 30 were identified for surgical correction, official sources here said. The surgery would be performed free of cost by the institute at Chennai next month. The district administration would bear the transportation charges. In the last two years, similar camps were conducted and free surgeries were performed on 160 children.
Woman dies of burns
She was admitted to the Government District Headquarters Hospital on Thursday night, police said. Acute stomach-ache was said to have forced her to take the extreme step, police said. Her husband, Ramasamy, who also sustained burns while attempting to rescue her, has been hospitalised.
Annual credit plan
The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S. Ayyaru, said credit flow would be Rs. 443.72 crore for agriculure sector, Rs. 23.55 crore for industries and Rs. 36.32 crore for service sectors. Mr. Ayyaru appealed to the bank managers to expedite the sanctioning of loans to the borrowers. The Chief Regional Manager, R. Vaidyanathan, Indian Overseas Bank, the lead bank, said the bank had disbursed Rs. 445.20 crore against the target of Rs. 371.75 crore.
