3 killed, 4 injured in accident

Thanjavur: Three persons were killed on the spot and four others, including the driver, were injured when their Tata Sumo car dashed against a tree at Pudukudi near Sengipatti, 20 km from here, on Saturday.

The deceased were Gopal Iyengar (55), his father Venkatachary (92) and Saya (55), a neighbour of Gopal Iyengar's house in Bangalore. The injured persons Jayasri (49), wife of Gopal Iyengar, their sons Srikanth (26), Rajiv Roshan (24) and driver Manu (36) were admitted to Thanjavur Medical College Hospital.

They were proceeding to visit Navagraha Kshetras when the accident occurred. Gopal Iyengar was an officer in the Karnataka Tourism Development Corporation. — Special Correspondent

Man dies in fireworks explosion

CUDDALORE: A forty-year-old man died when fireworks stacked in his place at Sanjivarayankoil in Naduveerapattuaccidentally caught fire and exploded on Saturday.

The police said Kaliaperumal was a licensed dealer. The cause of the fire is being probed. — Special Correspondent

Prisoner commits suicide

CUDDALORE: An inmate of the Cuddalore Central Prison ended his life within three days of his internment. He was found hanging in the outer quarantine section of the jail on Friday night. He was taken to the government hospital where he was declared dead.

Vijayan alias Vijayarangan was sentenced to jail on charges of raping and killing a nine-year-old Alamelu of Chellancheri on July 26. He was said to have committed the crime in an inebriated condition and left the body in a sugarcane farm.

Vijayan reportedly used a towel to hang himself. On information about the suicide, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Kumaraswamy, along with Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar, visited the prison and made enquiries. — Special Correspondent

Man picked up near ISRO centre is a lunatic

TIRUNELVELI: The interrogation of K. Sivan (45) of West Bengal, picked up while wandering near the Indian Space Research Organisation's Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, Mahdneragiri, in the district on Friday, reportedly failed to yield useful information to the police security agencies members.

"He is a lunatic who worked at Ramanathapuram for a while. After he lost the job, he was going everywhere aimlessly and accidentally came to this spot. The camera he carries is not highly sophisticated as reported in a section of the media. He is not logically sound and cannot comprehend, recall and give information coherently," a police officer told The Hindu .

The police contacted their West Bengal counterparts and corroborated the information from Sivan. "Once we are satisfied, he will board a train for his homeland," another police official said. — Staff Reporter

Special train to Patna

CHENNAI: Southern Railway is to run a special train to Patna to clear the extra rush of passengers.

Train no. 0842 will leave Chennai Central at 9.10 p.m. on July 30 and reach Patna at 4.30 p.m.

August 1.

The train will halt at Gudur, Nellore, Ongole, Tenali, Vijayawada, Warangal, Balharshah, Nagpur, Itarsi, Jabalpur, Allahabad and Mughalsarai.

The composition of the train will be 8 sleeper class, 4 general second class and 2 luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Residents picket road

THENI : Residents of Kombai picketed the Kombai-Bodi Main Road on Saturday, demanding resumption of kerosene supply to cardholders. They alleged that names of more than 400 ration cardholders in town were neither included in the respective ration shops nor in authorised kerosene depots in the town.

Ration rice seized

Ramanathapuram : Revenue officials on Saturday seized 41 bags of ration rice at a shop on Karikadai lane. The officials recommended the Food Cell police to file a case against S. Kannan for hoarding the rice.

Six huts gutted

Ramanathapuram : Six huts were gutted at Masanapuram near Sayalkudi on Friday. Tenders put out fire. The cause is yet to be known.

Water level

MADURAI : The water level in the Periyar dam stood at 122.60 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 495 cusecs and a discharge of 1000 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai dam was 44.98 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 513 cusecs and a discharge of 944 cusecs.

The combined Periyar credit stood at 4212 mcft. The Periyar dam recorded 7 mm of rainfall followed by Tekkadi 6, Gudalur 1.5 and Shanmuganadi 1 mm. — Staff Reporter

Differently-abled persons sent to Chennai

KARUR: Collector B. Chandramohan flagged off two buses carrying 120 differently-abled persons to Chennai to be fitted with artificial arms, limbs, calipers, etc. free of cost. The Karur District Private Bus Owners Association and textile exporter Goodwill Raju had arranged for a bus each to transport free of cost the 120 identified persons. Food packets were provided to the passengers.

List of polling stations to be published

KARUR: The list of polling stations for the coming local body polls will be published on August 1, says Collector B. Chandramohan. After reviewing the poll preparedness at a meeting, he said objections should be intimated and an all-party meet should be convened before August 7.

The final list of polling stations should be published on August 14, the date on which the manuscript copy of the electoral roll should be completed. The electoral roll should be published on August 31, following the schedule given by the State Election Commission, he said.

Medical camp for children

PUDUKOTTAI: A camp to identify children below 15 years affected by cleft-lip and palate was organised at the District Rehabilitation Centre here on Saturday.

A medical team, comprising a plastic surgeon and two technicians from the Sri Ramachandra Medical College and Research Institute, Chennai, screened the children. Out of the 50 children, 30 were identified for surgical correction, official sources here said.

The surgery would be performed free of cost by the institute at Chennai next month. The district administration would bear the transportation charges. In the last two years, similar camps were conducted and free surgeries were performed on 160 children.

Woman dies of burns

PERAMBALUR: A 35-year-old woman, Mariyayi, succumbed to burn injuries on Friday, after she set herself afire at her residence in Bharthiar Nagar.

She was admitted to the Government District Headquarters Hospital on Thursday night, police said.

Acute stomach-ache was said to have forced her to take the extreme step, police said.

Her husband, Ramasamy, who also sustained burns while attempting to rescue her, has been hospitalised.

Annual credit plan

PERAMBALUR: The Annual Credit Plan envisaging a credit flow of Rs. 503.59 crore was released here on Friday.

The Project Officer, District Rural Development Agency, S. Ayyaru, said credit flow would be Rs. 443.72 crore for agriculure sector, Rs. 23.55 crore for industries and Rs. 36.32 crore for service sectors. Mr. Ayyaru appealed to the bank managers to expedite the sanctioning of loans to the borrowers.

The Chief Regional Manager, R. Vaidyanathan, Indian Overseas Bank,

the lead bank, said the bank had disbursed Rs. 445.20 crore against the target of Rs. 371.75 crore.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 119.35 feet on Saturday.

The inflow was 11,533 cusecs and the outflow 21,920 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Girl student killed in accident

TIRUNELVELI : A Standard IX student was killed in a road accident near here on Saturday. The police said M. Mohana Priya (14) of Melapillaiyarkulam under the Maanur police station limits fell down from a speeding bus when the driver reportedly applied the brakes. She was trapped under the wheel and died on the spot.

The Maanur police arrested the driver P. Thambidurai (45) of Vallavankottai near here.

Customers duped

Tuticorin : The police are on the lookout for Basheer Ahmed and three others, who run a travel agency here on charges of duping customers.

An investigation was launched into the incident after 66 customers complained to the police on Friday that the accused took money from them on the pretext of procuring jobs for them in the Middle East and then `vanishing' from the town. — Staff Reporter

Applications

ERODE: Applications for the Class VIII examinations that are to be held in December are welcome from private candidates, says a release from the office of the Zonal Deputy Director, Government Examinations Department. It says the candidates should have completed 12-and-a-half years as on December 1.

There is no minimum qualification to appear in the exams. Those who have discontinued education or had failed in English can also apply.

The examination fee is Rs. 125 and the forms can be obtained between July 24 and August 18, adds the release. The last date for submitting applications is August 18.

Woman murdered

ERODE: A 60-year-old woman was found murdered in Devanampalayam, near Pallipalayam, on Friday. The Pallipalayam police identified the deceased as Jayalakshmi, wife of Periasamy. They said the woman had sustained head injuries. Property dispute could be a cause for the murder, they added. - Staff Reporter
