Respect court verdict: Archbishop

Staff Reporter

KOTTAYAM: Archbishop Joseph Powathil, chairman of the Inter Church Council for Education, on Saturday warned the Government against creating an atmosphere of confrontation by proceeding further, legally, using public fund.

In a signed statement, the Archbishop said the proper way was to respect the Court verdict (pronounced on Saturday by a Division Bench of Kerala High Court on the Kerala Professional Colleges Act). The managements are ready for dialogues for this purpose, he said.

He also asked political parties to advise student organisations to show discretion and wisdom in this respect. It was not democratic to hold protest marches against court verdicts. Leaders should show the wisdom to understand that such tendencies, if allowed to thrive, would ultimately work against the democratic system, the Archbishop said.

The Archbishop also appealed to television channels and the print media to take care to report the proceedings in the court impartially.

Uncertainty affecting students: BJP

Staff Reporter adds from Thiruvananthapuram: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) feels that serious problems affecting the self-financing educational sector have been rendered even more acute by the Kerala High Court order. BJP State president P.S. Sreedharan Pillai said the settlement of the issue was getting prolonged with the Government's decision to move the Supreme Court against the order. The uncertainty was affecting the future of thousands of students. He urged the Government to convene an all-party conference immediately to find a solution to the issue.

The Hindu Aikya Vedi asked the Education Minister to tender an open apology to the students and the people.
