Tackle eye disorders among children: Datta

Special Correspondent

Such problems attributed to frequent viewing of TV

MAKING A POINT: Spokesperson of the State unit of the Janata Dal (S) Y.S.V. Datta at `Drishti Jagruthi', a free eye check up camp for primary school children, organised by the Shimoga Rotary Club in Shimoga on Saturday.

SHIMOGA: MLC and Janata Dal (Secular) spokesperson Y.S.V. Datta said here on Saturday that eye-related problems among children should be tackled effectively.

Inaugurating "Drushti Jagruthi", a unique programme involving free eye check-up of primary school children in Shimoga taluk launched by the Shimoga Rotary Club, he attributed such problems among children in urban areas to frequent viewing of television programmes and the "faulty" education system. He lauded the initiative taken by the Shimoga Rotary Club in organising the free eye check-up camps and said such programmes would go a long way in helping the needy.

Mr. Datta said the club should serve as a model to other clubs.

Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy said teachers should address themselves to the eye-related problems of children. President of the Shimoga Rotary Club Devdas N. Naik said the programme aimed not only at detecting the defects in the eyes of schoolchildren in Shimoga taluk but also at creating awareness among them about the care to be taken.

He said the programme was being conducted by the club in association with the Malnad Ophthalmologists' Association, District Blindness Eradication Committee and the Zilla Panchayat under which 5,000 primary school children would be covered. He said 600 schoolteachers would be given training initially in detecting eye disorders, by surgeons after which they would detect eye defects among children. Chief Executive Officer of zilla panchayat P. Bore Gowda, the municipal Commissioner Jayanna, Chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Education Yogish and president of the District Ophthalmologists' Association H.D. Srinivas were present.
