Staff Reporter

Offenders were connected to people in the car rental business

CHENNAI: The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police arrested a chauffeur and his friend on charges of cheating.

Police said Ranjith, a software engineer from Tambaram, filed a complaint stating that his driver, B. Anvar Sadiq and his friend, N. Arunachalam, had given his vehicle on a monthly rental basis to a private marketing company functioning from Aziz Mulk Street in Thousand Lights.

However, the driver, a resident of Sadhanandapuram, Perungalathur, had not paid the monthly rent to Mr. Ranjith and did not return the vehicle. Instead, the duo asked Mr. Ranjith to pay them Rs. 7.5 lakh to buy another luxury car, which could be again given to the same company on rent. After they got the money, they did not buy the car as promised, Mr. Ranjith alleged.

Police arrested both Sadiq and Arunachalam, a resident of West Tambaram, on Thursday and remanded them to judicial custody.

A similar complaint from J. Sasikanth, a cab operator of East Tambaram, stated that he had given his two luxury cars on rent to A. Mehboob Batsha of Tirupur Kumaran Street, West Tambaram and P. Rajesh of H Block, Anna Nagar.

They entered into an agreement and a sum of Rs. 40,000 was fixed as rent and other charges for the vehicles. Mehboob Batsha gave a cheque for the amount to Mr. Sasikanth. But the cheque bounced.

Mr. Sasikanth stated in his complaint that he finally traced one of his cars with a person in the Secretariat Colony.

When asked, the person said he had hired the car from Mehboob Batsha and had paid him Rs. 75,000. Mr. Sasikanth said he had to pay Rs.75,000 to recover his car.

Several attempts to contact Mehboob Batsha and P. Rajesh proved futile and When they were contacted, they allegedly threatened Mr. Sasikanth with dire consequences if a police complaint was lodged against them.
