CHENNAI: Two chain-snatching cases were reported in the last 24 hours. Police said the first incident took place on Harrington Road, Chetpet, on Saturday, while the second one happened in a suburban train compartment on Friday evening. Two persons followed Mala (45), a resident of Harrington Road, in an autorickshaw before snatching her chain, weighing six sovereigns. Chetpet police have registered a case and are investigating. In the second incident, a college professor, Preetha, lost jewellery weighing six sovereigns to a snatcher. Police said the resident of Mandaveli boarded a train to the Beach on Friday around 3.30 p.m. When the train stopped at the signal point between Royapuram and Washermanpet stations, a stranger suddenly snatched her chain and jumped off the train. She was travelling in the ladies compartment and was not able to say when the stranger boarded the train. Only a few passengers were present when the incident took place. The Korukkupet Government Railway police have registered a case and are investigating.
Cash stolen
Thieves broke into a rice shop in Tiruvalluvar Nagar, Rajamangalam, and stole Rs. 24,000 in cash. Police said the shop belonged to Gunasekaran. Te thieves removed a portion of the shop's asbestos roof to gain entry. The Rajamangalam police have registered a case.
