New feather in CSIR's cap

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has added another feather to its cap with a U.S.-based pharmaceutical company choosing to furtherdevelop and commercialise a new molecule developed by the Council's Chandigarh-based Institute of Microbial Technology for busting blood clots.

The company, Nostrum Pharmaceuticals, presented a cheque for $100,000 to the Institute earlier this week as the first payment for acquiring worldwide licensing rights for the molecule, which promises to be better than Streptokinase, the traditional remedy for blood clots.

Speaking to reporters, Yatindra Prashar, President of Symmetrix Pharmaceuticals, an affiliate of Nostrum Pharmaceuticals, said the firm was attracted to the new molecule as it was designed to be active only in the vicinity of blood clots and, therefore, would overcome the risk of severe bleeding.
