CHIDAMBARAM: Union Minister of State for Railways R. Velu said on Sunday that the citizens of Chidambaram would get a Pongal gift from the Southern Railways in the form of a road over-bridge. About 50 per cent work on the Rs. 13.3-crore over-bridge was over, and the rest would be completed by January 2007. It would ease traffic congestion at the railway gate and enable speedy access to Annamalai University, including the Rajah Muthiah Medical College Hospital. Also, the Chidambaram railway station would get a facelift. Already, works amounting to Rs. 53 lakh had been taken up, but due to lapses on the part of the contractors there was not much progress. Hence, new tenders had been called for, and this process would be completed in a fortnight. As part of the facelift, the platforms would be improved and passenger amenities increased. An enquiry terminal would also be installed. Mr. Velu said the Rs. 182-crore Villupuram-Mayiladuthurai gauge conversion project would be completed by December 31, 2007. R.C. Jat, Divisional Railway Manager, accompanied the Minister.
