ALAPPUZHA: Minister for Cooperation G. Sudhakaran said here on Sunday that the State Government would collect fees as per the fee structure recommended under the professional colleges Act from students of colleges in the cooperative sector. Mr. Sudhakaran said that on July 27 the Government had directed heads of self-financing professional colleges in the cooperative sector against continuing last year's fee structure, though the court had given permission. On July 29, the Government again informed the heads of cooperative professional colleges that only the fee structure recommended by the Self Financing Act should be implemented. The Minister observed that the Government might lose crores of rupees due to this decision. "But, we will implement the Self Financing Act at any cost," the Minister said. He said he hoped that all professional colleges in the State would follow the example set by cooperative colleges. Mr. Sudhakaran said it was true that a letter issued by the head of Cooperative Medical College, Kochi, had demanded development fee of Rs. 25 lakhs from students who had applied for NRI quota. But, that letter had also noted that the final decision on fees would be taken only on the basis of the order of the Division Bench of the Kerala High Court and the opinion of the State Government. The present controversy on that order was made highlighting only a part of it, the Minister said. Mr. Sudhakaran said that in cooperative self-financing professional colleges, the fee structure in Government colleges would be followed in 50 per cent of total seats and fee structure recommended by K.T. Thomas Commission would be implemented in 35 per cent of the seats. In the case of NRI seats, an annual fee of Rs.5.65 lakhs would be collected. The Minister warned that stern action would be taken against those who violated the Government Order.
