Efforts on to bring back bodies

Victims from Cuddalore, Villupuram and Vriddachalam

Chennai: Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi told The Hindu that all efforts were being taken to bring back the bodies of those killed in the fire in Bahrain on Sunday.

He told The Hindu that the Indian embassy would get in touch with families of the victims, mostly from Cuddalore, Villupuram and Vriddhachalam, once the identification process got over.

"The bodies will be brought to Chennai at the earliest. We are coordinating with the embassy as well as the Tamil Nadu Government," he added.

According to the report sent by Mr. Shetty to the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs, Prime Minister Shaikh Khalifa Al Khalifa along with other officials visited the spot and addressed the Indian community.

"He reassured the Indians and ordered an investigation of possible security violations by the building owners," said Mr. Ravi.

The Minister said that according to the ambassador's report, the owners of the building that housed 200 workers of Royal Towers construction company had been given a warning in January about inadequate safety measures.

The victims were sleeping on the third floor and died mainly because of smoke inhalation and not burns, said the Minister. Eleven persons are being treated for burns.

"We suspect that the death toll increased because of overcrowding," said the Minister. He added that he had talked to his Bahrain counterparts earlier about the living standards of workers from India.

He said the Ministry is also looking into other such overcrowded buildings housing workers in the vicinity.

The Ministry has also opened two helplines: 011-24197972, 26874250.
