Two top IT officials charge-sheeted

Case pertains to pre-emptive purchase of land at Mogappair

CHENNAI: Nine persons, including two top income-tax officials, have been charge sheeted by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for offences including conspiracy and forgery of security and under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The charge sheet has been taken on file by a Special Court for CBI cases in Chennai.

The prosecution case is that in 2002 the accused conspired to cheat the Centre.

In pursuance of it, the income-tax officials abused their position and dishonestly issued an order in June 2002, making pre-emptive purchase of a piece of land located at Mogappair, for Rs.3.24 crore.

Verification not done

The validity of the title and genuineness of documents were not verified. The order was issued knowing well that the Tamil Nadu Housing Board had acquired the property in 1984. The sale deed pertaining to the land was stealthily removed from the TNHB office and submitted to the income-tax department.

Fabricated documents were submitted, causing a wrongful loss of Rs.2.87 crore to the income-tax department and corresponding wrongful gain to the accused.

Those named as accused in the charge sheet are, Kalpagam Bhaskaran, the then Commissioner of Income-Tax (CIT) and Member-I of the Appropriate Authority; P.K. Dev Verman, then CIT and Member-II of the Authority; S.K. Dhawan (since retired) then Chief Engineer and Member-III of the Authority; Kanagaraj Mudaliar of Mogappair East; T.N.R. Gopal of T.Nagar; K.E. Varadarajan of Tambaram; Chandramurthy of Nerkundram; S.R. Rajendran of Thiruvengadu and P.V. Krishnan of Velachery.
