HYDERABAD: Home Minister K. Jana Reddy on Sunday said the Government was planning to introduce road safety in the school curriculum, beginning from third standard, in the State to create awareness of traffic rules among students. Participating in a `Think road safety' programme organised by Apollo Hospitals and the Traffic Police here, the Minister exuded confidence that the road safety curriculum would make children safe road users in the future. He said under-age driving, ignorance of rules and road conditions were responsible for the alarming increase in road accidents.
Training in first-aid
The Minister said over 2,000 traffic personnel would be trained in a phased manner by Apollo Hospitals in giving first-aid treatment to victims of road accidents. He later presented awards to students who took part in painting and slogan writing competitions. Earlier, an awareness run was flagged off by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) A. K. Khan at Kasu Brahmananda Reddy Park in Banjara Hills. Around 500 students participated in the run carrying placards on road safety. It passed through the main thoroughfares of Jubilee Hills Checkpost, Filmnagar and culminated at Apollo Hospital in Jubilee Hills where a programme on road safety was organised. Enthusiasm hung in the air when fitness trainer Dinaz, badminton player Pulella Gopichand and singer Karunya started trudging along with the children till the main venue. Cyberabad Police Commissioner M. Mahender Reddy said school children would be the potential source for changing the mindset of the people in implementing road safety measures successfully. He said Cyberabad had witnessed more accidents this year than other districts in the State.
