Water level

MADURAI: The level in the Periyar dam on Sunday was 122.4 feet (full level 136 feet) with in inflow of 509 cusecs and a discharge of 972 cusecs. The level in the Vaigai Dam was 47.48 feet (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 730 cusecs and an outflow of 941 cusecs. The rainfall recorded (in mm) at various places is as follows: Periyar Dam 28, Thekkadi 10, Gudalur 3 and Shanmuganadhi 3.

BPL survey list

The Below Poverty Line (BPL) survey list of 2002 will be displayed at the village panchayat and panchayat union offices in the district till August 12. Persons eligible to be considered for inclusion in the BPL category and whose names do not figure in the list may petition the respective Block Development Officers for appropriate action, says a release.

Blood donation camp

A blood donation camp was conducted by the National Service Scheme and National Cadet Corps of Nadar Mahajan Sangam Sermathai Vasan College For Women recently. A team from the Government Rajaji Hospital organised the camp. Around 75 students donated blood at the camp, which was inaugurated by S. Gousalya, Principal.

Notebooks distributed

Free notebooks were distributed to students of Rathna School and Abode Organisation by G. Rajendiran, advocate, at a function organised by People's Multipurpose Service Organisation. N. Shanmugavel, president, presided. A. Pushparajan, secretary, welcomed.

Traffic violations: 558 cases filed

In a recent drive against traffic violations, the police registered 558 cases against offenders and realised a penalty of Rs. 57,100.

Under the directions of the Commissioner of Police M. Chidambarasamy, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Pon. Nagaraj ordered the one-day operation.

Thirty cases were booked against autorickshaw drivers who were caught plying with students over the permissible limit.

Cases were registered against 27 tricyclists for transporting loads disproportionate to the size of the vehicles.

Action was also taken against drunken driving, dazzling headlights and over-speeding, among others, according to a press release. — Staff Reporter
