BIJAPUR: At least eight villages two in Bijapur district and six in Bagalkot district have been waterlogged following the floods in the Krishna and its tributaries, the Ghataprabha and the Bhima, in the last 24 hours. All the three rivers have been flowing at the danger level even as over 300 families, most of them in Bagalkot district, were shifted to safety. Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Mohsin, who held an emergency meeting on Monday, told The Hindu that the Bhima waters entered Dasur village in Indi taluk. There was knee-deep water on the village road but residential areas had not been affected. Tarapur, a village in Sindagi taluk on the banks of the Bhima, was facing flood threat. A mechanised boat had been kept ready to face any eventuality. The people residing in low-lying riverside villages had been asked to move to safety, he said. Meanwhile, increased discharge from the Alamatti Dam flooded at least three villages either side of the river. Gangur village in Muddebihal taluk on the left bank of the Krishna was flooded, following which five families were shifted. According to reports reaching here, the Ashraya Colony of the village has been waterlogged. The (Alamatti) discharge also affected some of the right bank villages such as Turadagi and Valkaldinni in Hungund taluk of Bagalkot district. Water level at Koodalasangama, a pilgrimage centre, is just three steps below the Sangamanatha Temple. Water discharge from the Alamatti Dam, which was reduced to two lakh cusecs in the morning, was again raised to 2.5 lakh cusecs following the flood warning. The Central Water Commission estimated the inflow in the reservoir to be 3.14 lakh cusecs in the next 24 hours, according to Gopalakrishna Gupta, Executive Engineer of Alamatti Dam Division. As the discharge was higher than the inflow (1.8 lakh cusecs at noon), the reservoir level fell to 517.68 metres from Sunday's level of 518 metres. The full reservoir level is 519.6 metres. Discharge from Hidkal Dam across the Ghataprabha caused flood in at least three villages in Mudhol taluk. According to Superintendent of Police (Bagalkot) Ramesh Harihar, 300 families were shifted to safety from Chinal and Nandgaum. Unofficial reports from Bagalkot district said villages such as Mirji (alongside Ghataprabha) in Mudhol taluk and Chinagundigadde (alongside Krishna) in Jamkhandi taluk were affected partially. Water discharge from the Narayanpur Dam, which is 60 km downstream of Alamatti, crossed 2.6 lakh cusecs in the evening. Water level stood at 490.32 metres as against full reservoir level of 492.25 metres.
