New Delhi: The Supreme Court collegium of judges, headed by Chief Justice Y.K. Sabharwal, has cleared the elevation of four senior High Court judges as Chief Justices of High Courts. The acting Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court, Vijender Kumar Jain, is to be elevated as the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court; Justice Hrjit Singh Bedi, judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court; Justice M.K. Sharma, judge of the Delhi High Court, as its Chief Justice; and Justice M. Karpagavinayagam, judge of the Madras High Court, as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court. Justice S.J. Mukhopadaya of the Jharkhand High Court is to be shifted to the Madras High Court. Authoritative sources told The Hindu that the proposals had been sent to the Union Law Ministry. Under the Memorandum of Procedure in the appointment of judges, the Centre should ascertain the views of the States before making the appointments. Sources said comments would be sought from the States in a couple of days. After they are received, the proposals would be forwarded to the President.
