Hari Krishna takes sole lead

NEW DELHI: Favourite P. Hari Krishna outplayed second-seeded Hungarian Zoltan Almasi in 54 moves to head the six-player field with 2.5 points after three rounds of the Marx Gyorgy memorial chess tournament in Paks, Hungary, on Sunday.

Hari, playing white, won the Ruy Lopez game in an ending involving pawns and a bishop each. Almasi resigned when Hari threatened to claim his last pawn on the board.

China's Wang Yue scored his first victory by handing out to Hungary's Peter Acs his second defeat. Wang Yue moved to two points and occupied the second spot.

Hungary's Ferenc Berkes (1) and Ukraine's Zahar Efimenko (1.5) drew in 26 moves.

Meanwhile at Copenhagen, Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi ran into top seeded British Grandmaster Nigel Short and lost the ninth and final round of the Politiken Cup chess tournament in Copenhagen on Sunday.

The result saw the 13-year-old finish with 6.5 points and occupy the 15th spot after being tied for 10 to 21 places while Short tied at 7.5 points with the eventual champion Ukraine's Vadim Malakhatko and third placed Sweden's Jonny Hector.

It may be recalled that Parimarjan had trained with Short at the latter's residence in Athens before the event.
