Procession taken out in protest against `failures' of coalition Government

BELLARY: Congress activists, under the banner of the District Congress Committee, took out a procession here on Monday in protest against the alleged failures of the Janata Dal (S) and BJP coalition Government on all fronts and also against its alleged involvement in corruption pertaining to illegal mining.

They burnt the effigies of Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, Home Minister M.P. Prakash and Forests Minister C. Chennigappa at the Gadagi Chennappa Circle.

Congress activists, coming from various parts of the district, participated in the procession, which began from the Durgamma Temple, went through the main streets before reaching the Deputy Commissioner's office where a memorandum, addressed to the Governor, was submitted. They shouted anti-Government, anti-Chief Minister, anti-Prakash slogans throughout the procession.

The memorandum, which was read out by Shiraj Sheikh, president of the party's district unit and former MLA, urged the Governor to initiate steps to dismiss the Government in view of its failures on all fronts and also the bribery allegation.

The Congress activists demanded, among other things, an inquiry into the Rs. 150-crore bribery charge against the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues and also with regard to the alleged scam in the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastrure Corridor (BMIC) project.

The memorandum underlined the need for a CBI inquiry into the bribery charge in view of the allegations made by a member of the Legislative Council belonging to the party which was a partner in the coalition. The memorandum also said the Chief Minister had stalled BMIC project works to ensure the safety of his assets.

The Government had failed in controlling the spread of chikungunya and had not taken steps to provide medicine to the people. It had failed to distribute seeds at 75 per cent subsidy and was delaying the distribution of below poverty line cards to the poor, the memorandum said.

K.C. Kondaiah, MLC, Allum Veerabhadrappa, M. Diwakar Babu and Bhagirathi Marulasiddanagowda, all former Ministers, M. Shankar Reddy, Gujjal Jayalakshmi, S.G. Nanjayyanamutt, all former legislators, Anup Kumar, Gadilinganagowda, former Chairman of Mysore Minerals, Kamala Mariswamy, president of the district Congress women's wing, were among those who led the rally.
