Rathore fails to qualify for final

ZAGREB: Olympic silver medallist Lt. Col. Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore failed to make the final by one point and the Indian team missed the bronze by the same margin in the double trap competition of the 49th World shooting championship on Monday.

The 36-year-old Rathore, who had shot a bronze medal in the shotgun World Championship at Nicosia in 2003, had rounds of 47, 48 and 44 for a 139. He had to settle for the eighth spot.

Former Olympic champion Richard Faulds of Britain, who shot the only perfect 50 to bounce back strongly in the third round, China's Wang Nan and Hu Binyuan apart from Roland Gerebics of Hungary made the final with 142 each while Joshua Richmond of the US was a point behind at 141.

The second member of the Indian team Ronjan Sodhi rose to the occasion to shoot his best score at the world level, an impressive 137, following rounds of 45, 45 and 47, that placed him 12th in a field of 57 marksmen.

Vikram Bhatnagar was not able to pull his weight for the team's cause and had to be content with 126 following rounds of 43, 43 and 40 that placed 40th.

India was beaten to the bronze medal 402 to 403 by Russia, while the US and China took the first two places with identical total scores of 414.
