Cricket
Bangalore: It may not exactly have been back to the barracks but the Indian cricketers surely did have a taste of the Army's strict training methods as they spent a day here at the Parachute Regiment Training Centre (PRTC). On the penultimate day of their fitness camp, the players trooped into the PRTC at around 8.30 in the morning and had a closed-door session in which they donned Army fatigues. The players had an extended session and eventually their scheduled visit to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in the afternoon was cancelled.
Shiraguppi to retire
Former Karnataka wicketkeeper Somashekar Shiraguppi announced his retirement from first class cricket here on Monday. Shiraguppi, who made his debut against Hyderabad at Gulbarga in the 1994-95 season, was a key member of the Karnataka team that won the Ranji Trophy thrice in the 1990s. He has also played three Irani Trophy and two Duleep Trophy matches besides a lone match against the visiting South Africans in 1996. A fine wicketkeeper and a handy batsman, Shiraguppi along with Dodda Ganesh, had often bailed out the team with some resilient lower order batting. Shiraguppi played 31 Ranji matches, scoring 820 runs with a highest of 125 and also had 75 catches and effected 14 stumpings. Shiraguppi thanked everyone associated with the KSCA ranging from officials, coaches to the ground staff. He also specially thanked V. Jagannath besides his early coaches Vasanth Murudeshwar and N. Kumar.
