Facile win for Tiruvallur

CHENNAI: Tiruvallur scripted a nine-wicket win over Nilgiris in the TNCA Sumeru Soft inter-district under-17 cricket tournament for P.R. Thevar Trophy here.

Big win for Coimbatore

At Coimbatore, host Coimbatore coasted to a comfortable five-wicket win over Kanyakumari in at the TNAU grounds on Sunday.

At the Forest College grounds, Perambalur dashed the hopes of favourite Ramanathapuram with a four-wicket win.

With all three teams finishing with two wins and one loss apiece, it is now left to the TNCA to decide the top two qualifiers for the next stage.

Thiruvarur, Erode qualify

At the Velallar CE&T and Railway Institute grounds in Erode, Thiruvarur and Erode scored easy wins to qualify for the second stage.

Erode defeated Dharmapuri by eight wickets and earned a bonus points, while Thiruvarur scored a 78-run win over Pondicherry.

At Pudukottai, Kancheepuram and Vellore qualified for the quarterfinals from `E' zone.

The scores: At Chennai: Nilgiris 160 in 49.5 overs (S. Manoraj three for 31, Vignesh 30, John Samuel 44) lost to Tiruvallur 163 for one in 18.2 overs (S. Venkatvasan 66, G. Dinesh 60 not out).

Sivagangai 274 for nine in 50 overs (Somasundaram 27, Vivek Adhinam 40, Arul Anand 31, Aashiq Basha 59, J. Babu Kannan three for 63) bt Virudhunagar 176 in 43.1 overs (Manikandamuthuraman 47, Vivek Adhinam three for 24).

At Coimbatore: Kanyakumari 78 in 31 overs (Goutham three for 16, Nithish three for 19, Ashiq three for 9) lost to Coimbatore 80 for five in 20 overs.

Ramanathapuram 99 in 32.3 overs lost to Perambalur 103 for six in 38.4 overs.

At Erode: Dharmapuri 165 for nine in 50 overs lost to Erode 166 for two in 18 overs (G. Sateesh Kumar 74, J. Ashtaq 43 not out).

Thiruvarur 181 in 47.4 overs (Tamilmani five for 26) bt Pondicherry 103 in 32.3 overs (Manikandan five for 21).

At Pudukottai:

Tirunelveli 138 all out in 43 overs (Bilva Prasad three for 25, Naresh Babu three for 33) lost to Vellore 139 for one in 33 overs (Zia-ul-sheriff 53 n.o, Tabarak Baig 43 n.o).

Kancheepuram 232 all out in 50 overs (Kevin Sukumar 72, Raju three for 31) bt Krishnagiri 187 for three in 50 overs (J. Balakrishnan 103 n.o, J. Raju 55 n.o).

Indrajith, Dhathojwal shine

Helped by Dhathojwal's seven-wicket haul, including a hat-trick, and B. Indrajith's unbeaten 141, Tiruvallur scored an innings and 139-run victory over Madurai in the TNCA inter-Districts under-13 two-day cricket tournament which concluded in Chennai on Sunday.

Anirudh, Karthik slam centuries

At Coimbatore, riding on the brilliance of R. Anirudh (150 not out) and S. Karthik (121), Coimbatore thrashed Thanjavur by an innings and 359 runs.

Despite batting on a wicket that was full of runs, the visitor posted a poor 47 in its first essay. Then Srivardhan (93), Anirudh and Karthik exploited the conditions well to help the host post a healthy 455 for five declared. Thanjavur, in its second essay, folded cheaply once again for 49.

At Nagapattinam, Erode, by virtue of its first innings lead over Nagapattinam, entered the quarterfinals. The winner will now play Kanchipuram at Erode on August 8 and 9

At Chennai: Madurai 40 in 25.5 overs (R. Dhathojwal seven for nine including a hat-trick) and 106 in 33.1 overs (Ateek Fazal 44, S. Sreekar Adithya five for 17) lost to Tiruvallur 258 for nine decl. in 111.3 oves (B. Aparajith 30, B. Indrajith 141 not out, P. Roshan 31).

At Coimbatore: Thanjavur 47 & 49 in 30 overs lost to Coimbatore 455 for five decl. in 88 overs (Srivardhan 93, R. Anirudh 150 not out, S. Karthik 121).

At Nagapattinam: Erode 163 in 79 overs & 90 for five in 30 overs bt Nagapattinam 115 in 59 overs (S. Arun four for 10).

Football trials

Trials to select the Tamil Nadu football team for the Special Olympics, slated to start on August 24 in Bhopal, will be held on August 6 at the Annamalai University campus, Chidambaram.
