Two naxal dalam commanders surrender

KHAMMAM: Two dalam commanders of the CPI (ML) Praja Pratighatana surrendered before Superintendent of Police Rajeev Kumar Meena here on Monday. Kranthi alias Aila Ramesh, commander of Mulkapalli area dalam was formerly involved in extortion of money from contractors. Alem Sammaiah, Manuguru dalam commander, was involved in exchange of fire with the police at Singaram and Venkatapuram villages last year. - Staff Reporter

Two students drowned

KADAPA: Two ninth class students, P. Ravi and S. Nagarjuna, both 14 years old, drowned in a tank near ST Colony in Porumamilla town on Sunday. They were part of a group of six students who went for a swim in the tank. According to the police, the two drowned, as they could not swim. - Staff Reporter

CLP demands apology

HYDERABAD: The Congress Legislature Party (CLP) has demanded an apology from Telugu Desam president N. Chandrababu Naidu for making a `false' claim that chikungunya had claimed lives in the State. CLP leaders quoted doctors attending a TDP-sponsored workshop on chikungunya as saying there were no fatalities among those hit by the viral fever. - Special Correspondent

Naxal violence in agency areas

VISAKHAPATNAM: A Girijan Cooperative Corporation depot and office of the State Forest Development Corporation at R.V. Nagaram in G.K. Veedhi mandal were attacked on Sunday night allegedly by CPI Maoists. A dozen armed persons suspected to be members of Galikonda Local Guerilla Squad broke open the GCC depot and took away five bags of rice. They put up a banner of Martyrs Week being observed by the Maoists at the depot.Some files, an almirah and office furniture were set on fire at the APFDC office. - Special Correspondent

Compensation for Gulf War-hit

KADAPA: The Union Government has decided to pay compensation to 704 persons of Kadapa district who incurred losses or sustained injuries during the Gulf War in 1991, Collector M.T. Krishna Babu said on Monday. Union Joint Secretary (Kuwait Cell) has forwarded the names of 704 persons of 31 mandals in the district to Kadapa Collectorate for verification.

Red sanders seized

KADAPA: Police and forest officials in a joint operation seized red sanders worth Rs. 20 lakhs from Desai Mavi Reddy estates at Chakrayapet. Forest officials raided the estates and seized 23 red sanders worth Rs. 1 lakh on a tip-off. On further searching of the premises, another tractor-load of red sanders was found. - Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

NIZAMABAD: An Armed Reserve constable, Ramesh (34) and his friend Sandeep (25) died in a road accident at Dichpally Crossroads, 18 km from here, on Sunday night. The accident occurred when Ramesh hit a truck container parked near a dhaba while coming by motorbike from Hyderabad. - Staff Reporter

Country-made bombs explode; two hurt

ONGOLE: Two persons were injured when country-made bombs exploded accidentally in the house of a TDP leader in the faction-ridden Santhamagulur village in Prakasam district on Monday. The bombs exploded in the house of Adusumilli Sreerama Murthi, former sarpanch of Kundur village in Addanki mandal injuring two rowdy sheeters. All male members of Murthi's family fled. - Special Correspondent

Congress worker killed

GUNTUR: Congress worker Salikinedi Moshe, a resident of Solasa village in Edlapadu mandal of Guntur district, died in poll violence on Monday after he was hit with a stone during clashes between Congress and TDP workers on Sunday. Violence that began on Sunday continued on Monday with TDP workers torching haystacks of Congress sympathisers in Vellaturu village. - Staff Reporter

Madanapalle: Former district governor of Rotary International 3190 district Bhansali said Rotary Club was striving to eradicate polio by launching health camps. Student killed in accident

Madanapalle: An Intermediate student T. Padmini (16) was killed in a road accident near Bangalore bus stand here on Sunday. She was going to college to attend special classes with her uncle on a scooter when a container lorry coming from the opposite direction knocked them down and ran over Padmini. Correspondent

Scholarship arrears to be paid

CHITTOOR: The arrears of scholarships, tuition fee and examination fee for the two years 2005 and 2006 will be distributed among 17,000 SC students studying in 300 colleges through their principals, said Deputy Director of Social Welfare Raghuram here on Monday. Correspondent

Municipal meeting

CHITTOOR: Several councillors at the municipal meeting held here on Monday expressed concern over the incidence of chikungunya in the town. They called upon the authorities to take action and prevent its further spreading. Municipal Chairperson Sarala Mary presided over the meeting. Correspondent

EdCET office opened

TIRUPATI : The Education Common Entrance Test (EdCET-2006) administrative office has been opened on Sri Venkateswara University campus here on Monday. It may be noted that SVU has been entrusted the task of conducting the test for the second consecutive year. Inaugurating the office, Vice-Chancellor S. Jayarama Reddy advised the wing to keep in mind that the test would decide the fate of as many as 2.5 lakh candidates. Rector K. Sivasankar Reddy and CET convener D. Ramakrishnaiah were present. Two run over

KADAPA: A medical shop owner and a labourer died in different accidents in Kadapa town on Monday. P. Uma Devi (25) was going home from her medical shop when a speeding tractor ran over her, according to the police. In another accident, a labourer B. Harikrishna (17), who stood on a tractor trolley fell off it near Koti Reddy statue here and was crushed to death under the tractor tyres, police said. The driver fled. Staff Reporter

Academic session at NCC camp

ADILABAD: An innovative lecture on `English grammar made easy' was organised at the annual camp of the 32 (Andhra) Battalion NCC on its new premises of Nalanda College, near Mavala village, on Monday.

K.S. Sai Kishore, Principal of Laltekdi Tribal Residential Junior College and Associate NCC Officer, talked about easy formulae to learn English grammar.

Insurance-linked bank deposit scheme

Kakinada: Dhana Lakshmi Bank is introducing an insurance-linked recurring deposit scheme as a part of its two-month long savings festival commencing on August 1, according to branch manager G. Damodara Rao.

At a press conference here on Monday, he said the focus during the campaign would be on promoting current, savings and term deposits and NRE and FCNRB accounts. He claimed that the bank had a range of products and services tailored to meet the needs of all sections of society.

PCB awareness programme

VIZIANAGARAM: Private hospitals and nursing homes have been asked to register with the Pollution Control Board by August 3.

Speaking at an awareness programme on `bio-medical waste management and handling' here on Sunday night, PCB Zonal Chief Engineer Bhaskara Raju asked nursing homes and private hospitals to follow the guidelines released in 1998. He said a mechanism would be evolved shortly for disposing of bio-medical waste. PCB Executive Engineer Venkateswarlu said that those who failed to register before the due date would be prosecuted. - Correspondent

Collector makes surprise visit

Srikakulam: Collector V.N. Vishnu on Monday directed officials of the Government hospital here to take immediate steps to improve sanitation and hygiene on the hospital premises.

Mr. Vishnu, who made a surprise visit, sought details of other requirements so that he would write to the authorities concerned action.

Trader ends life

Kakinada: A bullion merchant of Pithapuram Bosha Naga Kishore Reddy, 40, reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his residence in Amaravilli village on Monday. The U. Kothapalli police registered a case. -Correspondent

One killed in road accident

GUNTUR: An autorickshaw carrying six persons from Vinukonda to Darsi overturned on the outskirts of Vinukonda on Monday evening leading to the death of a 40-year-old man, who could not be identified immediately.

The autorickshaw travelling at a high speed hit a scooter leading to the accident, in which four others also received injuries.

Even while the TDP rasta roko was going on in Vinukonda town, this accident occurred and the victims were shifted to the Government hospital there. - Staff Reporter

Medicine for chikungunya

KHAMMAM: NSUI activists served homeo medicine for chikungunya to 2,000 students in the SR& BGNR Government degree college here on Monday. NSS volunteers took part in the distribution under the supervision of college principal B. Babu Rao and government doctor K. Kama Raju. -- Staff Reporter
