HYDERABAD: Jandhyala Harinarayan, an IAS officer of the 1970 batch, assumed charge as the 28th Chief Secretary of the State on Monday, succeeding T.K. Dewan who has retired. Mr. Harinarayan had served as Secretary, Union Ministry of Water Resources Development, New Delhi, before taking up his present assignment. Mr. Dewan handed over charge to his successor at a brief ceremony in the Secretariat. Later, both of them called on Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy who conveyed his good wishes to the new Chief Secretary and gave a broad outline of his Government's policies. The Chief Minister bade farewell to Mr. Dewan who will now assume office as Chairman of Andhra Pradesh Tourism and Travel Development Corporation for two years. Mr. Harinarayan, who hails from Vijayawada, has about two years to go before his retirement in February 2008. He joined the State Government service as Assistant Collector in 1971 and since then has served in various capacities, including Collector of Srikakulam and Krishna. He was Principal Secretary, Irrigation, before going to Delhi. Talking to reporters later, Mr. Harinarayan said his experience at the Centre would be useful in view of the top priority given to irrigation by the Government.
