Mass campaign to save water body in Kozhikode city

Staff Reporter

Students and others take a pledge to protect it

ON CONSERVATION: Sugathakumari, poet, inaugurating `Mazha Yatra,' a programme to promote awareness about the importance of storing rainwater in Kozhikode on Monday.

KOZHIKODE: The city witnessed an unusual gathering on Monday.

In a symbolic move, scores of students of colleges and schools in the city and its suburbs, environmentalists and social activists gathered together to take an oath to conserve the vast water body on Mini Bypass Road. The students named it `Nagara chira' (City lake).

They were participating in the programme `Mazha Yatra' (Rain campaign) organised by the Paristhiti Samrakshana Ekopana Samiti in association with the Land Use Board, Kerala State Remote Sensing and Environment Centre, Jalanidhi and the district panchayat on water conservation.

Appeal to authorities

The oath, administered by poet Sugathakumari, appealed to the corporation authorities, Land Use Board and the State Government to preserve the water body, which spanned over two acres, for posterity, ensure its conservation, and prevent reclamation of one of the few large remaining water bodies here.

Students' vow

The students vowed to stall any move to reclaim the City lake, situated on the west of Mini Bypass Road between Arayidathupalam and Eranhipalam. The City lake recharged the water table in scores of wells in the vicinity.

Mayor M. Bhaskaran presided. Achyuthan, environmentalist, delivered the keynote address on the efficacy of conserving water bodies.

As part of the five-day Mazha Yatra, awareness rallies are being held at 50 centres in Kozhikode district.

Mr. Sadhu said the objective of the State-level programme was to create awareness among the public on water conservation and rainwater harvesting.
