Inflow into Krishna river increases

Nearly 1,000 families have been shifted owing to swelling of Ghataprabha

    Belgaum: The inflow into Krishna river from six rivers, including from the water being released from Koyna dam in Satara district, rose to 2,62,648 cusecs on Monday afternoon.

    According to official sources here on Monday, 72,686 cusecs of water is flowing out of Koyna dam, which recorded 16 mm rainfall on Monday.

    Subsequently, 2.53 lakh cusecs of water is being let out from Almatti dam across the Krishna river in Bijapur district.

    Nearly 1,000 families from Adibatti and Melvanki villages have been shifted to safer places owing to swelling of Ghataprabha river following release of 52,990 cusecs of water from Ghataprabha dam.

    Sources said that although the two villages had been rehabilitated earlier, the residents continued to have their dwellings and cattle sheds in the fields in the low-lying areas on the banks of the Ghataprabha.

    Nearly families whose houses are below the maximum level of the river near Gokak town have been shifted to `Ganji Kendra' opened in the APMC Yard in the town. Sources said there had been no loss of life owing to the floods. Owing to swelling of rivers, road links have been cut off to about 50 villages in the district. The bridges, roads links, barrages and villages affected include Kallol barrage, Sadalga barrage, Karadaga, Bedkihal, Sidnal bridge, Boj, Kunnur, Jatrat-Dhecashi and Ankli bridge in Chikkodi taluk; Kudachi, Diggewadi, and Raibag bridges; Chitapur-Chamlapur in Raibag taluk; Ugar (BK) Road, Saptasagarteerth Road, Janwad-Mulwad Road, Saptasagar-Siddapur Road, Shegunshi-Koligud Road in Athani taluk; Lolasur and Tigadi bridges; Gokak-Koujalgi bypass; Adibatti-Melvanki; Konnur bridge in Gokak taluk; Asoga-Khanpur bridge; Iddalhonda Road; Aamgaon bridge; and Karambal-Jalaga Road in Khanpur taluk. There are also reports that five villages on the banks of Krishna river in Athani taluk on the verge of getting submerged.

    `No loss of life'

    Sources said that no loss of life reported in the district. The administration has provided boats and taken up other rescue/relief measures. Alternative routes have been opened for vehicular movement in roads and bridges.

    With Belgaum and Khanapur taluks receiving incessant rainfall for the past two months resulting in overflowing of Markandeya river and Bellary "nala," large tracts of agricultural lands have been inundated. This has badly affected standing crops.
