THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The CPI-led All India Youth Federation (AIYF) has called upon the Government to probe the sources of funding of private self-financing colleges. Addressing a news conference here on Monday, AIYF State president P.S. Supal and secretary V.S. Sunil Kumar, MLA, demanded a comprehensive investigation that would cover the way the private self-financing colleges had raised money to set up their colleges and the `blatant trade in education' being indulged in by them. The investigation should also cover admissions given by these institutions in the past, they said. The AIYF leaders also told the Government not to compromise on any provision of the Kerala Professional Colleges Act passed unanimously by the Assembly when negotiating with the private self-financing college managements. The managements, they said, were challenging the people by not accepting the law enacted by the Assembly and warned them of more chaos if they persisted with such tactics. Giving statistics, they said the managements would not suffer any financial loss if admissions were conducted under the provisions of the new law. There would, in fact, be a marginal increase in the number of discretionary seats. This showed that the private managements were interested only in reaping profits through trade in education. The LDF Government had brought in the new legislation to prevent such trade in education, they pointed out. They called upon the managements to show flexibility and accept the popular verdict in the larger public interest and urged the Government not to agree to any compromise on the objectives of the law enacted by it.
